Tactics need to be introduced in the right order. We recommend defense, transition, offense and special situations. Even in the introductory stages, basic tactics can be taught. Try starting out with simple tactics like: 1 hand on the ball, do not put the ball underwater, be between the player and the goal on defense.
During the CRAWL Phase, players will learn “press and help”. Press is the most basic defense and is best explained by each player being responsible for his/ her opponent. During this defense, players are taught that each position has a number. They should also learn terms like ‘ball side’, ‘lane press’ and ‘transition from press to zone’.
Examples: Foul to steal when you need the ball, deny the pass, anticipate the next pass.
On offense, movement and responsibilities are very important. Athletes need to understand that every position is the beginning point (1-driver, 2-driver, 3-attacker, 4-driver, 5-driver, 6-center) Each of these positions have priorities and all tactics derive from getting the key players in the right spots.
During the CRAWL Phase we recommend you break down teaching to 4 categories:
Working the 2-3-4 communication and responsibilities both on defense and offense
Working the 3-6 relationships in the same situation, center and point man must be on the same page on offense
Right side mechanics 4-5-6, use of left handed players and responsibilities on defense
1-2-6, rotation, post driving, don't compromise your defense
To get there, the total tactics are not as important as the fundamentals.
