This section of the 6-8 Coaching Program was designed by Olympic Goalie and Coach Umberto Panerai. The training and videos are broken up into three phases. Each phase consists of a variety of drills and exercises meant to help any goalie (at any stage of their career) train correctly. 99% of clubs and teams in the USA do not have a goalkeeping coach even though ‘goalie’ is arguably the most important position in water polo. We hope that this comprehensive outline of training and drills will provide all goalkeepers with the resources they need to achieve greatness.

PHASE 1

In this phase we introduce exercises that teach the correct technique for thew lower body. Symmetry of the legs will create the perfect balance of the body while blocking.

PHASE 2

The second phase of ‘The Goalkeeper’ consolidates the techniques learned in the first phase and expands to focus on muscle strengthening. Here we are working your lower body with continuous tension and changes in intensity- focusing on a quick recovery after a block. We also begin to work with the upper body on reaction speed and staying calm.

PHASE 3

In this last phase we emphasize the mastering of movements and techniques from the previous phases. The purpose of this phase is to increase the strength and coordination of the goalkeeper. At this stage, the coordination and reaction time is performed on the coach’s command.
