The Passing Drill serves to primarily emphasize the importance of passing in water polo. At a young age, this test can help you identify if athletes have strong enough arms to make the pass. This drill helps you evaluate their movement and rotation to see if those need to be improved.
With older athletes, you are trying to understand why it can seem so difficult for someone to make an accurate 12.5 meter pass. In other sports like football, hitting a target for a QB is standard, but in water polo, we generally use passing as a prelude to shooting (instead of the other way around).
Passing is what leads to athletes having stronger legs, better posture and overall shooting skill. Focus on more passing drills, long distance passing, passing and catching off balance and goalie passing. Make sure to incorporate passing drills in all phases of water polo, such as 6 on 5 or set passing. Passing is our most underrated skill that can help an athlete succeed quickly.
