A huge part of any sport is understanding the game. This is especially true in water polo since it’s a complex and philosophical game. Coaches should take the time to talk to their athletes about our sport and introduce them to our basic rules.
Coaches can start with a brief history of how the rules have developed. Athletes need to understand the rules but also the “why” behind the rule and how it applies in a game situation.
For example, what does it mean to be inside the 2m and what is the reason for this rule? Another idea: have athletes come up with reasons as to why a ball under should be a rule. These types of interactive activities will make the rules stick in their heads!
We recommend that you have all of your athletes watch our “rules” series on the 6-8 Sports app. After they watch each video, discuss what they learned and apply the lessons to real life scenarios during training.
