One of the most important methods of teaching (yet not very well known) is “posture training”. This consists of developing core, leg positioning, elbow height, hip rotation, forearm, shoulders, wrist and hand strength. All of these skills have to align correctly to create a great shooter and passer.
Significant time (15- 30 minutes) should be devoted to this method during daily practice. When training posture, it’s important to evaluate players individually, as the bio-mechanics are different for each (example: a 6’5” player will have a different motion than a 5’11” player).
Posture needs to be taught, not coached. We recommend breaking the skills into segments and working on them individually with young athletes. As athletes mature (around 14 years old) they should already have their posture established. Correct posture will also prevent injury when learned correctly.
