Swimming helps athletes move through the water, but the vertical game helps athletes become water polo players. Legs are the foundation to this sport. In the Crawl Phase, it is crucial to teach eggbeater and vertical breast kick properly (spend time on this).
The vertical game can be difficult to teach as most coaches are not able to actively be in the water as they coach. This is why having athletes watch our videos is important. Without a solid eggbeater and breast kick, athletes will not be able to develop their game further.
The vertical game should be introduced early on and incorporated into daily training. Laps of eggbeater (in different ways) as well as vertical breast kick exercises, help make this movement natural and allow athletes to develop the leg strength and coordination needed to reach the Walk Phase.
The earlier you can make the vertical game a priority (legs) and a regular fundamental in each training, the more successful your athletes will be.
