The Radar Gun drill tests the velocity of an athlete’s shot. The elements that come into play are arm speed movement, leg strength, posture, core and hip rotation. Many players have naturally strong arms, but fail to use their core or rotate correctly. Imagine how much faster their shot could be if they engaged all of the elements.
Talk to your athletes about watching how a pitcher in baseball throws the ball. Pitchers use their entire torso to launch the fastest pitch possible while many times in water polo we tend to only use our arm.
Athletes can fix this issue out of the water by using bands, powerflex cords, impact ball drills and even playing catch with a baseball. In the gym, incorporate drills that strengthen the core, hips and legs. In the water, focus on passing. When a shot is off, don’t keep shooting continuously but instead move to pasing. Focus on posture, making sure athletes bring their arm back and fully rotate. You can gradually build into shooting drills like ‘The Evolution of Shooting’.
